What's going on now
GoKnow Smartphones at South next year (7/6/2010)
The Lutheran High School Association and Lutheran High South have a partnership now with
GoKnow Mobile Learning Solutions. Lutheran High South will be a part of a pilot program for
giving every student in the entire school a smartphone for in-class usage. We will be one of
the first schools in the nation to do this with the entire student body. This summer
our entire staff as well as a few students were trained in the use of the smartphone devices.
The teachers were also given training on preparing lesson plans to make use of this mobile
technology.
In short, each student will be given a smartphone which uses the Sprint network. The device
will not have voice-calling or text messaging capabilities. It will have a data plan which is
always connected to the internet. The students will receive and be trained on these devices
during the first few weeks of school. In class lessons from each teacher will utilize this
mobile technology through various applications.
This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for the students and staff of Lutheran
South. It will be an amazing school year learning to take advantage of these new blessings
the Lord has given us to be used for the education and growth of the members of his kingdom.

Back to School Announcements (6/7/2010)
Dear Parents and Students,
Grace, mercy, and peace unto you all!
I pray that this letter finds you well and healthy and enjoying the beginning of a wonderful summer.
It is difficult to believe that while we have barely finished with this past school year, it is already
time to begin thinking about the upcoming school year.
Freshmen and Transfer Students: On Tuesday, August 24th, we will hold new incoming student/parent
orientation beginning at 6:30 pm. This orientation is designed for both the student and parents. At
this orientation, students will receive their class schedules, locker assignments, and other pertinent
information. Students will also be introduced to school activities such as sports, student council,
dances, etc. Parents will be introduced to our Boosters organization and school-sponsored events.
Returning Students: On Tuesday, August 24th, we will hold returning student registrations beginning
at 7:30 pm. At this registration, returning students will receive their class schedules, locker
assignments, and other pertinent information. All returning families are asked to provide a dessert to
share.
Fall Athletes: This fall we will be offering girls' volleyball, boys' soccer, girls' cross country,
and boys' cross-country. All practices will begin on Wednesday, August 11th with more information to
follow. Incoming and returning students need to have a physician-approved physical on file in the
school office in order to participate in practices and games. The form has been sent home with current
LHS students or is included with this letter. Those of you interested in doing a fall sport we will be
meeting three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) at Munson Park in Monroe at 2670 N. Custer
Rd. for some optional pre-season conditioning runs. These runs will take place at 9:00 am (before it
gets too hot outside!) beginning Wednesday, June 16th. Bring a water bottle as well. These runs will be
followed by weightlifting at LHS at 10:00 am beginning in mid-July. And for those of you that are
planning on volleyball, soccer, or basketball: like last year, we will have open gym for VB (Tuesday
from 6:00-7:30), open field for soccer (Tuesday from 6:00-7:30), and BB (Wednesday from 6:30-8:00). We
strongly encourage you to visit the calendar on our website regularly for confirmation of ALL times!
School Approved Outfits: Reminder to all incoming and returning students that LHS will continue to
have school approved outfits. Jeans are not permitted unless on special occasions. LHS spirit wear
will be permitted on Fridays and order forms will be distributed at Freshmen/Transfer Orientation and
Returning Registration. Click here to see the dress code located in the student handbook. Please
re-read this as you shop for school clothes for next year-especially the 2" from the collarbone rule for
girls and no sweatshirts allowed during the school day.
Hosting Foreign Exchange Students: Please contact me as urgently as possible if you are interested
in hosting foreign exchange students!
School begins on Monday, August 30th, with a half-day schedule. Included in this packet is a school
supply list for next year.

Thank You! (5/25/2010)
Thank you to all who worked so hard to coordinate our 1st Annual Steak Dinner/Comedy night. And thank
you to the roughly 220 attendees who showed their love and support for Lutheran South. This hard work,
dedication and support helped transform a creative fund-raiser idea into approximately $5000 in net
proceeds toward the completion of the 1st phase of our baseball field.
As a recap of the evening, it can be said it was a most enjoyable and memorable evening for all who
attended. The steak dinner provided was exceptional. The evening entertainment of the two comedians
was equally great. The attendees were even blessed to see a few of their local pastors up on stage with
one of the comedians dancing to the YMCA (in costume!). Mr. Garrabrant and Dr. Herzog each enriched the
group with encouraging words for the mission and growth of Lutheran South.

Delegate Meeting Reminder (5/21/2010)
Lutheran High School South would like to invite you to the Annual Spring Delegate meeting on Tuesday,
May 25th beginning at 7:30 pm. The meeting will be held at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran
Church located on Lutheran High School South's Campus.
This bi-annual meeting is an opportunity to learn more about the Lutheran High School Association
of Greater Detroit and our four Metro-Detroit area Lutheran high schools. You do not have to be a
voting delegate to attend the meeting. We are strongly encouraging each area congregation to send at
least one staff member and several lay people in order to become more informed about Lutheran High
School South.
Please contact the school office with any questions (734) 586-8832

Urgent Athletic Updates (5/14/2010)

Due to the waterlogged conditions of our soccer field, the girls soccer game scheduled for today has been moved to Thursday, May 20th at 5:00 pm. This will be a home game and will replace the away game scheduled for that day.
Baseball Reminder
Today's baseball game will be played at Washtenaw Christian beginning at 4:30 pm. We will play at the same field as we did previously this season.

Urgent Request for Help (5/14/2010)
The committee for the Steak Dinner and Comedy Night is seeking assistance with developing promotional displays for the event. We are looking to create posters that highlight some of the exciting things that have been happening at LHS this year. Ideas include:
- A highlight of this year's student life (i.e. dances, classes, activities)
- A highlight of this year's drama presentations
- A highlight of this year's athletic accomplishments
- Additions to our facilities (i.e. baseball diamond progress, scorer's table, new uniforms, etc.)
- Look how far we've come (i.e. a brief history of LHS)
- A power point presentation of LHS
If you are able and willing to assist with this project, please contact Rachel Garrabrant ASAP. The event is coming up next Friday!
This can be something you complete at home on your own or something that can be collaborated on in the school office.
Thank you for your continued support!
