LHS Welcomes New Teacher(3/13/2012)
I am pleased to announce the welcoming of Sharon Jordan as part of the LHS teaching community!
We welcome Sharon Jordan!
Yesterday I announced to the student body during chapel and to our Boosters organization last night that Sharon Jordan
has accepted the call to teach at Lutheran High School South.
Mrs. Jordan will be joining the LHS faculty next fall. Although Mrs. Jordan has been an elementary teacher at Christ
the King, Southgate, she was synodically trained to be a secondary teacher at Concordia College, Ann Arbor. Mrs. Jordan
has also received a Masters of Arts from Eastern Michigan University. Mrs. Jordan's certification credentials (Mathematics
EX Grades 6-12 and Science DX Grades 6-12) help strengthen an already strong LHS faculty!
The next time you see Mrs. Jordan, please extend to her your congratulations! To God be the Glory!

Spring Drama News(1/20/2012)
This semester the drama students will be producing Screwtape. This is a play based on the book The Screwtape Letters by
C.S. Lewis. There will be a parent/student meeting on Wednesday, January 25th at 5:30pm for any students who wish to participate as cast or
crew. Though there is a boys basketball practice at that time parents are invited to attend this meeting.
Auditions for males will be Monday, January 30th from 5:30pm to 6:30pm in the computer lab. Auditions for females will be Tuesday
January 31st from 3:15pm to 4:30pm in the Garrabrant classroom. (The basketball girls will be able to go first so they may leave for their game after.)
Also, at that Student/Parent meeting, Mrs. Witte will be discussing the traveling drama group that we hope to have created this semester. We
are looking to audition for 8-10 students who would be willing to go to area churches on Sunday mornings (or whenever service is) to spread the
gospel message. This would be a great way for the students to share in Lutheran South's ministry. More details will be given at the meeting.
If there are any questions or if you cannot attend the meeting please feel free to contact Mrs. Sarah Witte. (Her contact information is
available in the school office.)

Support Of Concordia University Ann Arbor11/14/2011
This is the last year that anyone who wishes to support Concordia
University, Ann Arbor may double their support through using a State of
Michigan tax credit. If a married couple donates $400.00 it essentially
would only cost them $200.00. If a single person donates $200.00 it
would cost them $100.00. Upon filing your State Taxes, you can list the
University donation on Schedule 2 Nonrefundable Credits. It is a credit
against the total tax owed to the State of Michigan. This is a tax credit not
a deduction thus you do not have to file long form to take advantage of this.
However, the tax law changes for 2012 thus this is the last year this credit
will be available.
Volleyball Wrap-up from Coach Manthei11/10/11
The LHS Girl's Volleyball team made history this season as the first ever LHS District Champions! They were able to beat
Baptist Park in the District finals on Friday, November 4th in front of their home crowd for an unforgettable night! It
was a magical night that we will be talking about for a long time!
The Saints went 4-4 in conference play, and though their record didn't show it, could have easily been 7-1 with having
heart-breaking losses in 5 games to conference rivals University Liggett and Huron Valley Lutheran. The Saints finished
second in their Washtenaw Christian Tournament and brought home a beautiful trophey after falling to Huron Valley in the
finals. The Saints also finished second in their own tournament this year, falling to Washtenaw Christian in the final
game of that match.
The Saints played with huge hearts in order to make up for their smaller than normal numbers this year. It showed
throughout the season when you watched them play. Their record on the year was 18-12-1. Even the Monroe Evening News
was starting to take notice with article after article on the Saints play.
The Saints will graduate 4 seniors this year - Chelsie McNett, Savannah Diroff, Melanie Anderson, and Jacki Morgan.
Though there will be some big shoes to fill next year, returning players Molly Roebke, Kristi Smrcka, Rachael Hunter,
Casey Dutcher, Alexis Starman and Marie Frank will be more than eager to help secure those roles.
The girls will be looking forward to to reclaiming a District title again next year, as the bar has been raised on
their expectations. We can't wait for August to come around again! Let's get started! :)
Coach Kim
Volleyball District Champions11/6/2011
Lutheran South is pleased to announce that our Girls Volleyball team has won the
District Championship in a dominating match against opponent Baptist Park. The Girls
left no room for doubt on the court this past Friday night as they controlled each
of the 3 games to take the match. This is the first District Championship for
Lutheran South in any sport and a major accomplishment for our growing school.
The Girls Volleyball team looks forward to advancing now to the Regional
tournament where their first game will be played at Lenawee Christian on Tuesday,
November 8.
Exciting Soccer News10/19/11
Lutheran High School South is pleased to announce that we will host the next round of district play in soccer. The
game will be held tomorrow (10/20) at Lutheran High School South at 4:30 pm.
We are in need of parents to assist with Concessions and Gate, so please contact Mrs. Garrabrant if you can help ASAP!
We encourage everyone to come out and support the Saints as they take on the Wildcats of Baptist Park in hopes of moving
onto the district finals on Saturday. As a reminder, there is a $5.00 admission for spectators as determined by the MHSAA.
Special Grade School Drama Performance10/18/11
We encourage all grade school teachers (and classes!) to consider coming to our Fall Drama Performance of The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood. The Special
performance for Grade Schools will be Friday, November 18, 2011 at 12:30 pm for $2.00 a person. (The show runs approximately an hour and a half). If
you have any questions, please contact the school office.
Additional Performances for the General Public will be held:
- Friday, November 18, 7:00pm
- Saturday, November 19, 7:00pm
- Sunday, November 20, 3:00pm
- $5.00 / person
A Synopsis of the play:
It sure is hard to be humble when you're a swashbuckling, egocentric super-hero. But our gallant guy-in-green tries his best as he swaggers through The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, a frantically funny, Monty Pythonesque retelling of the classic. This time around, the legendary legend, in his never-ending quest to aid the needy, encounters a lovely damsel-in-distress (oddly obsessed with skin conditions); an ever-scheming sheriff who would rather bowl a strike than hit a bull's-eye; a gold-hoarding, bad-guy monarch wannabe; and a good-natured "Town's Guy" who manages to make his way into every scene, whether he belongs there or not. Combine them with an expandable band of spoon-wielding Merry Men whose collective IQs equal six, and you've got an irreverent jaunt through Sherwood Forest you won't soon forget!
Paper Recycling Bin10/17/11
Here is the latest update on the paper recycling bin. We had a meeting with Abiti
last Wednesday and the bin should arrive within three weeks of the meeting
(November 2, 2011)! The bin will be placed in the last two parking spaces in the
southwest corner of the parking lot.
Thank you all for your patience in saving paper! We look forward to impressing
the company with a full bin quickly!

you only have to remember to get a check to the office. If each family could make the effort to use SCRIP this year, Boosters
could really profit from money we were all going to spend anyway. Contact LeeAnn Scott with any questions. She is the SCRIP
coordinator and will be willing to help in any way she can. Thank you LeeAnn for your commitment to this fundraiser.

LHS will be getting a Paper Retriever bin to earn money while we help the planet. Many of you may already know about this program. A bin is set up at LHS to collect paper. When the bin is full, the company comes to collect the contents of the bin and sends us a check. It is easy money.
We wanted to let you know about this program so you can begin saving these items:
newspaper, magazines, catalogs, direct mail, office and school papers and shredded paper in clear plastic bags.
There is no need to save these items for the bin, as they are not collected:
phone books, cardboard, kitchen or bathroom paper products, metal or plastic.
So start saving and look for the green paper retriever in August.
Correct Information Regarding Monroe Evening New Article(6/30/2011)
As many of you may know, an article appeared on the front page of the Monroe Evening News yesterday announcing 2011 MME and ACT score results for Monroe County. Unfortunately, the information for Lutheran High South was inaccurate.
The author of that article called me this morning. After walking him through the Michigan Department of Education's MME Score Report, he realized he was using the wrong data. He said that a correction will be printed. Hopefully that correction will be as clearly noticed as his initial article.
Just to let you know how LHS compares in ACT scores, our juniors in 2010 had an average score of 23.8. From ACT's website (http://www.act.org/news/data.html), Michigan averaged 19.7 and the national average was 21.0. Our juniors this year have an average score of 23.9 (based on information reported to LHS from ACT on juniors who have taken the ACT thus far). ACT has not yet released the state and national averages for 2011.
In regards to how Lutheran South students compare to our local public school, all you have to do is go to the Michigan Department of Education's website (http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-22709_35150_47475---,00.html). The MDE has put together an excel spreadsheet titled "2008-2011 MME ACT Scores Sortable By ISD, District, and School."
