English Requirements
Four (4) units

English 9
Prerequisite: None

The focus for the year will include grammar, writing, and literature. The course will incorporate a Daily Grammar activity. Students will have a review of grammar concepts as well as an introduction to writing strong paragraphs and completing a research paper. Students will complete a novel and a study of Romeo and Juliet.


English 10
Prerequisite: English 9

The focus for the year will include grammar, writing, and literature. Grammar focuses on reviewing sentence structure, usage and mechanics. Composition is emphasized with a variety of essay types and a research paper. Literature study includes class reading and analysis of a novel, a drama, short stories, non-fiction and poetry. Vocabulary knowledge and application is studied throughout the year.


American Literature
Prerequisite: English 9 and English 10

This class is a year-long course in which works by American authors are read and discussed in their historical context. The genres include poetry, drama, short stories, the novel and nonfiction. Writing skills are developed through formal and informal literary response. This includes a thesis paper in which the students independently read, research and analyze a novel from an American author. Oral presentations are related to the thesis paper, literary selections and other various assignments.


British Literature
Prerequisite: English 9 and English 10

This course marries the history of the English language to the resulting literary works in a chronological survey of English literature from 449 AD to the present. The effect of major historic events of the culture of English society is explored through major writers. All genres of literature, from epic poetry to Shakespearean drama are visited; literary analysis and response takes the form of essays, projects and a thesis paper.


Composition
Prerequisite: English 9 and English 10

This class is a semester course and concentrates on the writing process. Writing skills are developed through writing a variety of essays including writing to inform and writing to persuade. A major thesis paper is also expected.


Novels
Prerequisite: English 9 and English 10

This course will concentrate on the development of the novel. The students will read a variety of novels and complete analysis. Students will gain experience in reading and interpreting various types of novels.
